Hazel's most famous song is the opening and title track of the 1971 Funkadelic album "Maggot Brain." It is said that lead singer George Clinton told Hazel to play the first half of the song as if he found out his mother had died and to play the second half as if he found out she came back to life. The result was a guitar epic that completely blew me away the first time I heard it.

I first heard Maggot Brain when looked through a collection of my dad's old CDs. I put it on in my room and was instantly drawn in by the soft arpeggios of Hazel's guitar. However, what truly blew me away was the ebb and flow of Hazel's soloing, starting with just a lone guitar and eventually erupting into explosive guitar pyrotechnics laced with wah and echo effects, which, in turn, subside, only to build up again.
